How Long Do Drug Test Results Take?

Drug screening is a vital process used by employers, medical professionals, and legal authorities to detect the presence of illegal drugs and prescription medications in the body. Among the various methods, urine drug testing remains the most common due to its ease of use, accuracy, and ability to detect a wide range of substances.(672 x 480 px) (16) Understanding the types of drug tests, what affects turnaround time, and how false positive drug results can occur is essential for anyone undergoing or administering drug screenings.

Types of Drug Tests

Drug screening tests work by detecting either the parent drug or its metabolites in biological samples. The screening test is designed to quickly identify the presence of substances, while confirmatory tests quantify and verify the results.

Drug testing can be performed using various biological samples, each with its advantages and limitations. The type of test chosen often depends on the purpose of screening and the detection window required.

Urine Drug Testing

Urine drug testing is the most widely used method for drug screening. It involves collecting a urine sample to detect the presence of drug metabolites—substances produced when the body breaks down drugs. This method is preferred because it is non-invasive, cost-effective, and capable of detecting many types of drug use over the past several days.

Urine drug screenings typically test for a panel of substances, including:

  • Illegal drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Prescription drugs that may be misused, including opioids and benzodiazepines

The detection window for most drugs in urine ranges from 1 to 4 days after use, although some substances like marijuana metabolites can be detected for weeks in chronic users. Urine tests are often used in workplace screening, probation monitoring, and clinical settings due to their reliability and ease of collection.

Hair Drug Testing

Hair testing offers a longer detection window, often up to 90 days, by analyzing drug metabolites deposited in hair shafts. This method is useful for detecting long-term or chronic drug use. However, hair tests generally have a longer turnaround time and are more expensive than urine tests. They are less commonly used for routine screening but are valuable in forensic or legal cases.

Blood Drug Testing

Blood tests detect drugs currently active in the bloodstream, providing a snapshot of recent use or intoxication. Because blood testing is invasive and has a shorter detection window (a few hours to a few days, depending on the substance), it is less commonly used for routine drug screening, but is important in medical emergencies and accident investigations.

Saliva and Sweat Testing

Saliva drug tests provide quick results and are non-invasive, detecting recent drug use typically within 24-48 hours. Sweat testing involves a patch worn on the skin to collect drug residues over time but is less common. Both methods are used in specific contexts such as roadside testing or continuous monitoring.

Your future is worth fighting for.

Let’s take that first step together.

How Long Do Drug Test Results Take?

Drug test results typically take between 1 to 5 business days to be processed, depending on the type of test used.

  • Urine tests, the most common method, generally take about 1 to 5 business days to return results. Negative results often come back faster, sometimes within 1 to 2 days, while positive results require additional confirmatory testing and can take several more days.
  • Hair tests have a longer turnaround time, usually between 4 to 10 business days, because they require more complex analysis.
  • Blood and Saliva tests also usually take 1 to 5 business days.

What Factors Can Delay Drug Test Results?

Several variables can influence how fast or slow you get your screening results.

Type of Test

The type of test (urine, saliva, hair, or blood) plays a big role in the turnaround time. Instant urine drug testing can give you results within minutes. In contrast, lab-based tests may take several days.

Need for Confirmatory Test

If the initial screening test shows a positive result, the lab will run a confirmatory test like Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). This step adds extra time but ensures the result is accurate and medically reviewed.

Lab Processing Time

High-volume labs may face backlogs, especially during peak hiring seasons. Delays may also occur due to weekends or holidays.

Sample Collection Errors

Mislabeled or contaminated urine samples can delay results. If the chain of custody is broken, the test may have to be repeated.

Employer or Legal Review

Sometimes the test results are ready, but the employer or agency requires further review or documentation. This can also delay communication of the final result.

It’s never too late to seek help.

Your healing journey starts now.

Medications That Cause False Positive Drug Test Results

Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs can lead to false positive drugs on a screening test. This is one of the most common reasons a drug test requires confirmation.

Common Prescription Medications

Some prescription drugs can trigger unexpected results:

  • Sertraline (Zoloft): May show a false positive for benzodiazepines
  • Rifampin: Can produce false positives for opiates
  • Tramadol: May be misidentified as an opiate or PCP

These drugs are often prescribed legally, but can affect urine drug screenings due to their chemical structure.

Over-the-Counter Medications

Even non-prescription meds can lead to false positives:

  • Ibuprofen: May trigger false positives for THC or barbiturates
  • Pseudoephedrine: Can mimic amphetamines on some tests
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl): Could be mistaken for opiates

If you're taking any of these, inform the testing center before the drug screening.

Supplements and Herbal Products

Some dietary supplements or CBD products can lead to false-positive results:

  • CBD oil: May contain trace amounts of THC
  • Weight-loss supplements: May occasionally include banned substances

Always check the ingredients of supplements before a screening test.

How False Positives Occur

Screening tests use immunoassays that detect chemical structures similar to the target drugs. Some prescription drugs share molecular similarities with illicit drugs, leading to cross-reactivity. This is why positive screening results must be medically reviewed and confirmed by more specific confirmatory tests to avoid misinterpretation.

What to Do if You Suspect a False Positive

If you believe a false positive has occurred, inform the testing authority or healthcare provider immediately. Providing a list of current prescription medications can help guide further testing. Confirmatory tests are highly accurate and can differentiate between true positives and false positives, ensuring fair outcomes.
