Fall Activities to Boost Mental Health During Recovery

Posted by Janice Story on October 27, 2025 at 7:29 AM

At Soberman's Estate, when autumn arrives, there are many subtle shifts. The light softens, the air cools, and the rhythm of nature begins to slow. It’s a season that reminds us that change can be both beautiful and necessary— and that transformation doesn’t always need to be dramatic to be meaningful.

What I Do To Stay Sober

Posted by Mitch Prager on September 27, 2025 at 12:16 PM

Recently we had a man complete his residential treatment at Soberman’s Estate and while attending his first weekly alumni meeting, he asked his new brothers – “What do I do to stay sober?” his new Alumni brothers quickly shared how they enjoy a sober life by participating in sober activities such as:

Traveling, Watching Sports, Playing Golf, Playing and or Listening to Music, Quiet / Meditation Time, Hiking, Bicycle Riding, Boating, Surfing, Hobbies, Family Time, Work, Fishing, Pickleball, Working Out / Gym, Smiling and Making Eye Contact with Others.

Message from Founder and CEO of Soberman's Estate, Mitch Prager

During treatment at Soberman’s Estate we discuss relapse prevention as part of a design to truly enjoy life free of alcohol and other addictions. We often share the analogy of Insulin – a diabetic can enjoy a full long healthy life as long as he takes his daily insulin. Similarly the alcoholic can enjoy a long healthy life if he takes his daily insulin. Our insulin changes over the years although we quickly learn that our insulin is enjoyable. While in treatment at Soberman’s Estate we learn our initial course of insulin may include walking in nature, talking with others, being with animals, journaling, meditating or working out. We learn that knowing what our new habits or our “insulin” is becomes part of our relapse prevention, aftercare and continuum of care plan which details our daily habits, or insulin if you will.

This newsletter it one of our many tools designed to achieve our goal of teaching men to enjoy their lives without alcohol or other addictions. May you learn to pause, rise above the noise and find serenity and joy throughout your sober journey.

Advice from a Tree: Wisdom for the Journey of Sobriety

Posted by Janice Story on March 24, 2025 at 7:30 AM

In nature, trees stand as powerful symbols of endurance, growth, and transformation. Their quiet wisdom reminds us that, like them, we too are meant to grow, adapt, and find strength in both our roots and our reach.

Recovery is a journey—one that requires resilience, balance, and trust in the process. Lets take some advice from a tree and see how it can guide us on the path to lasting sobriety.

Stand Tall and Proud

Recovery is not just about breaking free from addiction; its about reclaiming your life. Stand tall in your decision to be sober. Be proud of the work you are doing. Every day you choose sobriety is a victory—an act of courage and self-respect.

Go Out on a Limb

Growth requires taking risks. It means stepping outside your comfort zone, trying new things, and embracing opportunities that challenge and inspire you. Whether it's reconnecting with loved ones, exploring a new hobby, or being vulnerable in a group setting, dont be afraid to reach beyond what feels safe. Thats where growth and transformation happens.

Remember Your Roots

Your past does not define you, but it has shaped you. Instead of carrying shame about where you've been, or what you’ve done, use your experiences as a foundation for where youre going. You get to choose now, the seeds that you plant, where they are planted, and how they are cared for. Stay connected to the people, practices, and beliefs that ground you. Your roots—your values, your support system, and your commitment to sobriety—will keep you strong through life's storms.

Drink Plenty of Water

Self-care is essential in recovery. Just as a tree cannot thrive without water, you cannot flourish without tending to your basic needs. Prioritize hydration, nutrition, rest, and physical movement. But beyond the physical, nourish yourself emotionally and spiritually—whether that means meditation, time in nature, or meaningful conversations with others who support your journey.

Be Content with Your Natural Beauty

You are enough, just as you are. Addiction often distorts self-perception, leading to feelings of unworthiness or the need to prove oneself. But recovery is about self-acceptance—learning to embrace yourself without the masks, without the numbing, without the escape. You dont have to be perfect to be worthy of love, joy, and peace.

When Motivation Fades: Re-Igniting Your 'Why' in Sobriety

Posted by Janice Story on February 24, 2025 at 7:20 AM

In the early days of sobriety, motivation can feel like an unshakable force. You may have entered recovery with a deep sense of purpose—wanting to rebuild relationships, restore your health, or regain control over your life. But as time passes, that initial fire may dim. Daily stressors, routine, and even success can sometimes make it easy to lose sight of why you chose sobriety in the first place.

Coping with Loneliness in Recovery During Valentine’s Week

Posted by Janice Story on February 10, 2025 at 3:12 PM

For many, Valentine’s Week is a time filled with expressions of love, connection, and togetherness. But for men in recovery—especially those who find themselves alone due to the consequences of their addiction—this week can be a painful reminder of what was lost. It’s easy to feel isolated, to dwell on past relationships that didn’t survive the weight of addiction, or to compare yourself to others who seem to have it all together.

Overcoming Emotional Numbness: Learning to Feel Without Substances

Posted by Janice Story on February 3, 2025 at 10:25 AM

In the journey of sobriety, one of the most unexpected and challenging aspects can be learning how to feel again. For many men, the use of substances served as a numbing agent—a way to suppress difficult emotions, navigate stress, or simply escape the complexities of life. However, once substances are removed, what remains can often feel overwhelming. Embracing emotions without the crutch of substances is not only possible but also vital to long-term recovery and personal growth.

Calm the Racing Mind: Overcoming Future Tripping in Sobriety

Posted by Janice Story on January 27, 2025 at 12:42 PM

For men stepping into a life of sobriety, one of the most common and challenging hurdles is the restless, racing mind—the endless loop of thoughts. Even in moments of calm, it can feel like the mind is constantly racing, analyzing the past, worrying about the future, or creating unnecessary noise that makes peace feel out of reach.
