Why We Never Compromise on Care

People ask me from time to time what makes Soberman's Estate different from other treatment centers.

There are a lot of ways I could answer that question. I could talk about our size, our staff, our clinical team, or the fact that we care for a very small number of men at one time. Those things are important, but they aren't the first things that come to mind.

What comes to mind are the decisions we make every day.(672 x 480 px) - 2026-10-04T131549.882

I remember talking with a family who had already decided they wanted their husband to come to Soberman's Estate. They were ready to move forward, but after learning more about his situation, I told them I thought another program would be a better fit.

His wife paused for a moment and asked, "Why would you send us somewhere else?"

The answer was simple. My responsibility wasn't to convince them to choose us. My responsibility was to help her husband get the care he needed, even if that meant sending him somewhere else.

That's never been an easy conversation, but it's always been the right one.

I opened Soberman's Estate because I lost my brother Jeff and, two years later, my best friend Jerry. Both were good men who deserved every opportunity to recover. Losing them changed the way I look at this work.

"Families don't call us because they need another sales pitch. They call because they need someone who will listen, tell them the truth, and help them make the next right decision."
— Mitch Prager, Founder & CEO

When a family calls us, I don't hear a phone ringing. I hear people who are scared, exhausted, and hoping someone will finally tell them the truth. They don't need another sales pitch. They need someone who will listen, ask the right questions, and be honest about what comes next.

I've also learned that no two men arrive here for the same reason.

On the surface they may have a lot in common. They may be successful in business, respected in their community, and struggling with alcohol or another substance. But once you get to know them, their stories are rarely alike.

One man is trying to save his marriage. Another is worried about losing his career. Someone else simply wants his children to trust him again.

That's why we've never believed in treating everyone the same way.

Every man deserves to be seen as an individual. Before we decide what his treatment should look like, we spend time understanding who he is, what he's been through, and what he wants his life to look like when he leaves here.

Sometimes that means having difficult conversations. Sometimes it means changing our approach as we learn more about someone. Sometimes it means telling a family we're not the right fit.

None of those decisions are made because they're easy. They're made because they're right. At the end of the day, that's what I want people to know about Soberman's Estate.

We're not trying to be the right place for everyone. We're trying to do the right thing for every person who trusts us enough to call.

If we can do that, everything else takes care of itself.
